INVITATION TO THE BACHFEST LEIPZIG 2027

“First, I thought: That Matthes guy has delusions of grandeur! To stand up and just recompose the work we miss most from Bach, bar by bar, word by word, that text by Picander which Bach has set to music in 1731 and whose score has unfortunately been lost – that takes a good deal of audacity.

BUT: I am glad that Nikolaus had the courage to do so. For a good two hours of music which take us to a breathtaking world of sound, somewhere between the 18th century and today. With a great deal of passion, great emotion and a musical language that is both baroque and modern; not just a mere copy of style, but a very unique and highly exciting answer to the question of all Bach questions: What effect might have had this St. Mark Passion have had?

In that respect, there was no doubt for me: this piece MUST be performed at the Leipzig Bach Festival in 2027, which will be held under the motto PASSION and will be attended by people from all over the world. Because I am certain: it will both stir and inspire!”

Prof. Dr Michael Maul
Artistic Director of the Leipzig Bach Festival
